Cardiac Surgeon Administered Low Volume Cardioplegic Solution
Clinical experience and scientific evidence.

Myocardial protection is not standardised and extremely variable among centers and surgeons. Most cardioplegic solutions are not certified or approved by regulatory authorities. We review different types of cardioplegic solutions. We describe the development, the mode of application, mechanism of action, and evidence of a market approved standardised cardioplegia (Cardioplexol®), which offers an alternative low-volume approach to intraoperative myocardial protection.
This cardioplegic solution has been used in clinical practice for more than 17 years in Switzerland and received marketing authorisation in Sweden in 2024. Clinical studies and real-world experience with Cardioplexol® have been published.
